Foster care and adoption are things we are strong advocates for. And if you had asked us 5 years ago, we would tell you that we never thought much of it. We have family members who have adopted through foster care, and we have always thought it was a beautiful thing. But it wasn’t until our friends, the Watsons, had a little girl in their home that they were fostering, that it got very personal for us.
Foster Care
We wanted to help the Watsons out, and so we asked if we could take their baby girl for one night, so they could get some sleep. They eagerly agreed, and we brought this sweet girl into our home for a few hours. And then the Lord spoke. Almost audibly, to Kevin. Kevin heard: “This is your daughter. Will you step up to be her dad?” WHAT?!? Pretty crazy. We know. Especially since the goal of foster care is reunification, and at the time it looked like this little girl was going to be reunited with her bio family.
Adoption
BUT, as her case dragged on, it was clear that she was not going to be able to go back to her birth parents. So, we got licensed to be foster parents, and we adopted her after a long roller coaster ride! We first met Evie in September 2017, and it wasn’t until May 2018.
Hear More!
You can hear more about our story on this episode of the Fostering Voices Podcast, which is hosted by our friends, the Watsons. They are Evie’s original foster parents, and we are thankful for how our lives have intersected with theirs!
We Can All Do Something!
There is so much that everyone can do to support kids in Foster Care. You can donate money to local foster care agencies. We proudly support Christian Family Care Agency, as they are the ones who licensed us.
We also donated our old minivan, which was simply old, but in great working condition, to a bio family that had just gotten their kids back from the system. And there are many kids living in Group Homes (Congregate care) and you can sponsor one, and send pizzas, or toiletries, or other necessities throughout the year.
